S v e r e a n d r e c u r r e n t pneumococcal disease is more common with HIV infect ion. 13 Adults infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are at high risk for Streptococcus pneumoniae infections as a result of humoral immune dysfunction. The reported incidence rates of invasive pneumococcal disease in HIV-infected adults range from 197 to 5700 per 100,000 personyears, which are 6to 324-fold higher than rates for uninfected adults.1 Given the increased risk for pneumococcal disease, vaccination with the pneumococcal conjugate vacc ines reduce vacc ine type invasive pneumococcal disease and radiographically-confirmed p n e u m o n i a i n c h i l d r e n w i t h HIV 4. In addition, the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine was effective against vaccine-type invasive pneumococcal disease in a randomized controlled trial of HIV-infected adults with a recent history of pneumococcal disease.5

Effectiveness of the polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine among HIV-infected persons in Brazil: a case control study
BACKGROUND Polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for use in HIV-infected adults in Brazil but there is uncertainty about its effectiveness in this patient population. The main objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the 23-valent polysaccharide pneumococcal vaccine against invasive pneumococcal infection among HIV-infected adult patients in São Paulo, Brazil. M...
متن کاملCross-sectional study of nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in human immunodeficiency virus-infected adults in the conjugate vaccine era.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients have an increased rate of pneumococcal infections. Within the HIV-infected population, patients with low CD4(+) cell counts have a higher rate of pneumococcal infection. The purpose of our study was to determine pneumococcal carriage and to examine the serotypes carried by HIV-infected patients after the introduction of the conjugate vaccine....
متن کاملHigh Streptococcus pneumoniae colonization prevalence among HIV-infected Kenyan parents in the year before pneumococcal conjugate vaccine introduction
BACKGROUND Streptococcus pneumoniae is a leading cause of pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis in developing countries, particularly among children and HIV-infected persons. Pneumococcal oropharyngeal (OP) or nasopharyngeal (NP) colonization is a precursor to development of invasive disease. New conjugate vaccines hold promise for reducing colonization and disease. METHODS Prior to introduction o...
متن کاملImmunizations for HIV-infected adults: indications, timing, and response.
Vaccines routinely recommended for HIV-infected adults include those for influenza, hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B virus, pneumococcal infection, and tetanus. Responses to vaccination may be affected by CD4+ cell count and viral load. A number of live vaccines are contraindicated in the HIV-infected population. This article summarizes a presentation on immunization in HIV-infected adults made b...
متن کاملSafety, immunogenicity and efficacy of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine in HIV-infected individuals
Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading bacterial opportunistic infection in HIV-infected individuals. Anti-retroviral treatment (ART) of HIV-infected individuals reduces their risk of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), however, it remains 20- to 40-fold greater compared with age-matched general population. This review summarizes the available published data on the immunogenicity, safety and ...
